Aramaeans

Aramaeans
A group of tribal peoples who emerged in the middle of the second millennium b.c. from the Syrian deserts and established small kingdoms in Syria and along the Mediterranean coast, one of them centered in the town of Guzana. Some Aramaeans also migrated into northern and western Mesopotamia and settled wherever they could, which brought them into contact with the Assyrians, who then controlled that region. The Assyrians at first called them Ahlamu. As time went on, Aramaean tribesmen raided Assyrian and Babylonian farms and settlements and long remained a nuisance. The main contribution of the Aramaeans to Mesopotamian culture - indeed a major one - was their language, Aramaic, which eventually spread throughout Mesopotamia and other parts of the Near East.
